Nail abnormalities found during systemic illnesses

Nails abnormalities, sometimes, can give important clues towards the diagnosis of an illness. During the clinical years in Medical school as well as during postgraduate training, a student is expected to know common nail changes in different systemic illnesses.

This post includes a small video that is an effort to bring together all the commonly expected nail changes in systemic illnesses for ease. Before skipping to video down, a few lines to review nail anatomy.

Nail Anatomy

  1. Nail Plate: The nail structure
  2. Nail Bed: As the name implies, it is the bed for the nail plate
  3. Lunula: The white lunar-like area under proximal nail plate from where the nail plate grows
  4. Cuticle: Area of the dead skin covering the proximal nail plate
  5. Nail folds: The areas where nail and skin meet
