Nails abnormalities, sometimes, can give important clues towards the diagnosis of an illness. During the clinical years in Medical school as well as during postgraduate training, a student is expected to know common nail changes in different systemic illnesses.
This post includes a small video that is an effort to bring together all the commonly expected nail changes in systemic illnesses for ease. Before skipping to video down, a few lines to review nail anatomy.
Nail Anatomy
- Nail Plate: The nail structure
- Nail Bed: As the name implies, it is the bed for the nail plate
- Lunula: The white lunar-like area under proximal nail plate from where the nail plate grows
- Cuticle: Area of the dead skin covering the proximal nail plate
- Nail folds: The areas where nail and skin meet
